Wedding Saree or a Bridal Lehenga?

PICTURE OF THE DAY!

Today I wanted to post about Indian bridal wear, but when it came up to choose what to show you, I really couldn't select between a wedding saree and a bridal lehenga...

Then I decided to just show you both! You will tell me which one you like best!

Thank you Strand of Silk for these beautiful Indian bridal clothes!

Invited to an Indian wedding? Wear a Saree!

Dear All!

It seems like the bridal season has taken over!
I recently received a lot of calls and texts from some friends asking me what to wear for the weddings that they got invited to. Most of them were asking me about the perfect outfits for their friends' Indian weddings! I felt important. I know that among my friends I'm the one who knows the most about it.

I suggested to all of them to wear sarees for two reasons: the first one is that not only the wedding sarees, but all sarees are incredibly beautiful IMHO; the second one is that I think that for a European girl wearing a saree for a special event is more exciting as compared to wearing a Lehenga or a Salwar.
Lehengas and Salwars can be considered as a particular kind of skirt or dress, while a saree is a unique garment!

The styles above are two sarees by Siddartha Tytler (Left and Right) and a wedding saree by Raakesh Agarvwal. They are available on Strand of Silk's website!

PS: If you are looking for your perfect style for your friend's wedding, don't forget the right accessories!  Wedding Clutches are a must have this season!

See you soon for the next stylish advices!

Bright like an Indian Bridal Dress!

Dear all,

You know how beautiful and detailed indian bridal dresses are...
They are characterized by the embroideries and the precious appliques: my favorite are the mirror worked embroideries.

I recently read some articles about it! Here you can find the most interesting one that I found. Enjoy!

From Strandofsilk.com | Mirror Mirror

"Mirror embroidery originated in India in the 17th century. It is also called shisha or shisheh work, which means glass in Persian. This work involves fine craftsmanship to hold down pieces of glass or mirror on the fabric by embroidery threads. It is a kind of embroidery that was first found on garments worn by the traditional folklore in central and west India. It is a rather tedious process but is definitely worth." [Read More]

From Strandofsilk.com | It's time to go floral

Dear all,

As it often happens, I was navigating Strand of Silk website.. when I got captured by one the grey headings on top of the page : "Go Floral This Season!" - it said.

The first thing that I loved as soon as I landed on the article was the picture:
The beautiful Sonam Kapoor, which usually wears Indian long gown dresses on the red carpet, in beautiful white dress with floral motifs.
(See picture below)

"Floral motifs are what can be called a classic in terms of motifs. It is like having a white shirt in your wardrobe. They have been used starting from the Middle Ages till today and will continue to be used until the end of time. Though this is such a widely used motif, it is interesting how designers have been able to create so many variations of it. So many years and still new kinds of floral prints every season, isn’t that amazing?"

Cool, right? Read the rest of the article here!!

"Bollywood was always a lot more than just story telling. Today, this ‘something more’ is what we call trend setting. Of all the avenues of fashion following, Bollywood styles are the most followed and desired."

The article goes through some stylish suggestions taking the outfits performed by the beautiful Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor as a starting point.

Special Focus on: The Wedding jewels

In Indian weddings, jewellery is as much important as bridal lenghas dresses, the make-up and the hair.

It has been used for adornment since centuries and if men use bracelets, pendants and earrings, the Indian women wear them for other significance.
In fact, for Indian women, jewellery is considered auspicious and whatever they are poor or rich, women wear some jewels.
In Strand of Silk we think jewels bring light to a woman’s face and embellish her: her skin, her eyes and her hair are enhanced thanks to the colour and the of metal and precious stones.
Traditionally, jewellery has always been linked with wealth, power, femininity and status.

Jewels are gifted at different events and phases of life in an Indian woman’s life : birth, coming of age, marriage, becoming a mother, and certain ornaments are essential for married Indian woman.

We suggest you few indian contemporary jewellery pieces available on Strand of Silk’s e-shop. You can wear it during the day, on the evening, or even in a wedding:

East Meets West? We Meet Both!

Did you guys know that Strand of Silk is currently working with Imperial College London for their event “East meets West”?
Following this event is one of the first and most relevant responsibilities I have been assigned so far as an intern.

The event is now at its 21st edition, and in the past it was hosted in the most important theatres in London.
This year the event will take place in the Phoenix Theatre.

As usual, the Imperial College Indian Society created different choreographies for the teams of performers in the West and East segments.

It was beautiful for me to assist to the rehearse and choose some of the outfits for the performers in both segments!

Don’t miss the next updates on this and the other events in the Strand of Silk calendar!
