Top Looks from Deepika Padukone - Deepika Padukone Style

The lyrics went “Aankhon mein teri, ajab si ajab si adayein hain...." and Deepika Padukone found a place in the hearts of Bollywood fans with her debut in ‘Om Shaanti Om’. Today when we talk of Bollywood fashion, the list will not be complete without the mention of Deepika Padukone style. She has a svelte body with never-ending legs to match her attractive face and so, can carry any ensemble with grace.

Let us go through a few Deepika Padukone style statements that she sported at the different events in the last few years.

1. Filmfare awards, 2015

Filmfare is the equivalent of Oscars in Bollywood. Deepika wore a white dress with a fitted embroidered top attached to a long ruffled train behind and the dress was short ahead. Deepika managed to pull this risky look effortlessly. She took over the stage in her Ashi Studio dress shaking legs with the hosts of the event.

2. Filmfare awards, 2014
Deepika donned a metallic gold gown by Gaurav Gupta which looked like golden strokes painted on see-through fabric. Completing the look with side wept soft curls and pointy golden shoes; the dress was a lesser skin show version of Victoria Harvey’s dress.

3. Filmfare awards, 2013

Deepika Padukone style for this event was a black gown by Prabal Gurung, with sheer panels at the right places, accentuating her waistline and long legs. She kept the look minimalistic with just bold red lips.

4. Cannes, 2010

For the “On Tour” premiere at Cannes, 2010, an ivory and gold saree by Rohit Bal, with blingy blouse, clutch and matching cuff was the Deepika Padukone style statement. Complete with a Bindi and gold and pearl ear-danglers, she looked great.

5. "Chennai Express" Promotions, 2013

For the movie’s promotions Deepika was seen in a tangerine faux saree gown by Gaurav Gupta in London. The hair tied up, bold red lips, earrings and nude peep-toe pumps, hit the bull’s eye, in a very Deepika Padukone style.

6. Colours Screen awards, 2013

Deepika Padukone wore a turquoise green lace Dolce and Gabbana gown for the event. The lace dress had a fitted bodice underneath and her copper brown flowy hair and blush lips complemented the gown well.

7. Big Star Entertainment Awards, 2013

Deepika Padukone style for this event was a classic simple strappy white top with long flowing black skirt and the highlight was the emphatic necklace she sported. High tied ponytail and red lips with black peep-toe heels go well with this look.

She sported a similar white top look, but matched it with black palazzo pants at the Filmfare nominations party, 2013. This time the emphatic shimmer was added by a jacket designed by Rahul Khanna and Rohit Gandhi.

8. Colours Screen awards, 2012

The emerald green Gauri and Nainika dress Deepika wore for the event fits her like a glove. The dress is very structured with high neck in the front and daring low-back behind. The ruffles behind add drama to the form hugging outfit. A side hair braid with gemstones dangling earrings and white clutch speak volumes for Deepika Padukone style.

9. Filmfare 2014 Nomination party

Deepika wore a knee length quirky printed dress by Pankaj & Nidhi. Matching it with orange pumps and a skull necklace, don’t you think Deepika Padukone style is all thumbs up!

10. Zee Cine awards, 2013

Deepika’s ivory sequined Zuhair Murad dress with full sleeves and plunging neckline swept the red carpet. The accomplices to the look were red lips and pearl drop earrings with hair softly tied up.

From quirky to classy, short to long, Indian to Western and formal to casual the leggy lass can definitely pull any look with ease. Both on and off the red carpets, Deepika Padukone style makes for an interesting visual with varied elements that give us an exhilarating fashion feast.

The Best and the Worst Red Carpet Short Dresses

When it comes to the red carpet, a short dress is considered a risk against the long cascades of the gowns over the red carpet. However there are some red carpet short dresses that will make you go, “wow”. Let us first have a look at five red carpet short dresses that rebelled against the tradition and still managed to come out winners.

1. Zoey Deschanel, BAFTA Brits to Watch, 2011
Zoey in her Oscar de La Renta gold dress from fall-winter collection 2011 was a sight to take in. She looked amazing in the midi length dress with scalloped hemline. This dress can give any gown a run for the money.

2. Taylor Swift, Vanity Fair Oscar party 2011
Taylor swift looked gorgeous in a Zuhair Murad’s strapless, short number in gold with silver beads. She proves that red carpet short dresses do not always disappoint.

3. Jennifer Lawrence, Vanity Fair Oscar party 2014
The “American Hustle” actress wore a Tom Ford mini dress. It was a work of art with asymmetric mirror embellishments and sheer fabric on the side and back. It was an out of the box dress and it still managed to get thumbs up from the fashion critics.

4. Kate Bosworth, Vanity Fair Oscar party 2013
Kate carried a Giambattista Valli with intricate rose and silver embroidery to the Vanity Fair Oscars party. She nailed the look with berry lips and perfect hairdo.

5. Miley Cyrus, People’s choice awards, 2012
Miley is growing up into a style icon. The Hannah Montana star was seen in a white David Koma dress with plunging neckline covered with sheer panel. The bottom too had sheer panelling and overall her look was very chic.

Let’s now shift focus to the extremes whose dare-devilry failed to impress. Here are five red carpet short dresses that did not do justice to the celebrities donning them. You can also read my previous article about the Ten Worst Red Carpet Dresses Ever

1. Geena Davis, Oscars 1992
Designed by Ruth Meyers and Bill Hargate, Geena’s dress became memorable in the Oscars’ worst red carpet short dresses Hall of Fame. The satiny white dress looks like a can-can costume, short in the front and long behind. Also matched with white gloves and see-through black stockings, the look was a disaster.

2. Diane Kruger, Vanity Fair Oscar party, 2013
Diane Kruger’s Giambattista Valli dress was a caped very busy black and white ill fitting ensemble. It is definitely ill-fitting for the great red carpet short dresses list.

3. Cameron Diaz, Vanity Fair Oscar party, 2011
Cameron wore a Carolina Herrera pre-fall 2011 dress. It was an off-shoulder leopard print very short dress. Though Cameron has a great pair of legs, the dress was too tight across the thighs and bit trashy for the red carpet event.

4. Lara Flynn Boyle, Golden Globe awards 2003
Designer David Cardona dressed Lara in a ballerina inspired outfit for the event. She even complemented the outfit with Chanel ballerina shoes with heels. The look was different for the red carpet but not interesting at all.

5. Paris Hilton, Grammy awards 2009
Paris wore a Versace spring 2003 mini dress for the event. The dress is too tiny, revealing and has cheap shimmer on it.

From best to the worst, red carpet short dresses are becoming ubiquitous. There is a growing popularity of red carpet short dresses at events like Grammy and People’s choice awards.

The red carpet short dresses are also a popular choice for after event parties. Whatever the length, the dress should exuberate class and look red carpet ready. After all the celebrities do not want to end up as teenagers heading to proms!

Ten Worst Red Carpet Dresses Ever

Every year the celebrities walking on the red carpet feel the pressure to stand out among their peers. When the paparazzi is clicking and flashing away and the star-struck gaze is piercing them, the usual just won’t do.

In their attempt to get noticed sometimes celebrities actually end up in weird outfits. Here are some of the top ten worst red carpet dresses that we have seen ever!

1. Bjork, Oscars 2001
One of the most famous faux pas on the red carpet is by the Icelandic artist, Bjork. She wore a swan outfit designed by Macedonian designer, Marjan Pejoski, with the neck of the swan wrapped around her and fluffy white ruffles below resembling its feathers. She even pretended to lay an egg on the red carpet! Bizarre!

2. Lizzy Gardiner, Oscars 1995
Lizzy, the Australian costume designer, designed her own outfit made of American Express gold cards and carried it to the Oscars to win the award for the best costume design. Taking the best costume design award in one of the worst red carpet dresses ever, now that is ironical!

3. Demi  Moore, Oscars 1989
For the 61st Academy awards Demi designed her own outfit which comprised of bicycle shorts wrapped halfway behind with a black and printed metallic skirt. Bicycle shorts and Oscars; definitely not made for each other. After her dress became a part of the historically famous worst red carpet dresses, Demi left design to the pros, for her future red carpet looks.

4. Cher, Oscars 1986
Cher is known to break the rules as far as dressing is concerned at the red carpet. Her 1986 Bob Mackie black dress with magnificent headdress is still remembered for being outlandish. It is a bit too much.

5. Whoopi Goldberg, Oscars 1993
An outfit from Beverly Hills’ boutique, it was a purple full length robe tied around waist with neon green lining. The robe was worn with brocade pants and top. It was too bold and busy. Maybe Whoopi wanted to play clown at the red carpets too!

6. Celine Dion, Oscars 1999
Celine Dion wore a satiny Christian Dior jacket backwards with pants, sunglasses and a fedora. It was difficult to understand why the classy performer chose that outfit?

7. Hilary Swank, Oscars 2003
Hilary’s Christian Dior dress for the Academy awards 2003, made it to the worst red carpet dresses list as it looked like tulle wrapped over a pink cami-slip. It was a fashion mistake for this otherwise well dressed actress at the red carpets.

8. Uma Thurman, Oscars 2004
Uma Thurman wore a Christian Lacroix at the Oscars 2004. The dress looked like it was a homemade costume made by an amateur. It did not do justice to Uma Thurman’s great figure at all and was a complete mess! Uma admitted that the embarrassing dress was a bad choice and definitely it is one of the worst red carpet dresses ever.

9. Lady Gaga, Oscars 2015
While her Azzedine Alaia gown was stunning white with crystal studded embroidery, the red gloves killed the look. The gloves looked like a deliberate attempt to make it to the worst red carpet dresses list.

10. Amber Rose, MTV Video Music Awards 2014
This look magnifies the definition of the worst red carpet dresses. Well it is almost a no dress look. The hip hop star Amber Rose walked down the red carpet in silver chain ensemble designed by Laurel Dewitt. She showed a lot of skin in this barely covering bra-top and thong dress which is definitely a no-no for a red carpet event.

These were the worst red carpet dresses, which were definitely a miss. What the celebrities didn’t miss though was the attention and they will be remembered forever, for their unforgettable and disturbing worst red carpet dresses.

Indian Fashion Style: Sarees V's Gowns

We are recently seeing a lot of photographs on  social media with the specific tag #100sareepact. It is two innovative women who have started this new buzz, as they want to encourage the fact that wearing saree in the workplace is a great and stylish option.

This new virtual platform created by these two women is a space where people can celebrate their memories of sarees. All participants in this pact are attempting to wear a 100 saris before the end of this year. Since the creation of this website, there has already been 4000 visits and 1400 women who have participated. The concept is really simple, the person has to post a picture and explain how they feel when wearing a saree into the workplace.

But obviously, the pair want to go further with this, and not just wear sarees in the office, but begin to bring the saree back on the red carpet, instead of seeing the same thing over and over again: gowns. We used to see a lot of sarees on the red carpet with the previous generation of Bollywood actors such as Hema and Rekha Malini, who always showed up for ceremonies in stunning Kanjeevarams or subtle chiffons.

Before, Bollywood celebrities wore what they liked and looked good, based on their tastes instead of following all trends, what people wore was not so important. Nowadays, it’s different as everyone tends to follow trends of the moment to look stylish.

At Cannes 2015, we saw the Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor make an outstanding appearance with her voluminous gown. After this appearance, she then attended a press conference wearing a extremely unique fluffy outfit, although this choice of outfit was not such a success. The look was more suited for a teenager going to prom night!

The idea of bringing back more traditional clothes on the red carpet is for Bollywood celebrities to generate further attention from the international press. For this kind of big event such as Cannes 2015, every look is perfectly planned and thought out. Obviously, with all the paparazzi around celebrities, the stable black gown will be the safe choice, however, it will miss the brilliance and condition of making someone stand out. But, for the first time it will be difficult to convince Bollywood divas to be different and not follow the trends, because it will also mean taking the risk of stirring the fashion police, as all celebrities hate this kind of “bad” judgment.

When we look at Aishwarya Rai and Sonam Kapoor looking perfect in Elie Saabs and Oscar De la Rentas during Cannes 2015 Festival, we know that it was to stand out from the crowd. These two Bollywood divas ultimately looked extremely glamorous, and are obviously outstandingly beautiful,   but maybe the looks were slightly too much.

It’s always better for everyone to have fun with their fashion and not stress about what they will look like. For example, we saw the actress Nandita Das, in a simple black and red saree, she looked very natural and it had a greater impact.

It’s the right time for the designers to rethink about the approach to red carpet dressing. It will might be better to make people look comfortable, natural and fun loving with their outfits and not superficial.

Celibrity Showstoppers at Indian Fashion Weeks

For the last seasons of several Indian fashion weeks, we haven't seen a lot of celebrities walking the ramp.

A small variety of celebrity showstoppers were present for the spring/summer season for the finale of several Indian designers. Within the finales, we saw Aditi Rao Hydari for Payal Singhal, Koyal Rana for Joy Mitra, Sania Mirza for Ritu Pande, Monica Dogra for Kanika Saluja and Arjun Rampal for Rohit Bal. For a long time now, Indian designers have included celebrities in big events such as Wills Lifestyle Indian Fashion Week, because it’s a sort of distraction to have Bollywood celebrities walking on the ramp and even better for the audience. However, having these celebrity showstoppers during these events remains strictly business.

For example, this year for Amazon India Fashion Week, there were an unprecedented number of celebrities who attended, but not necessarily for walking the ramp. The first celebrity that we saw in a show was Sonal Chauhan for Nikhita Tandon, which wasn't until Day 4 of the event. And for the rest of the week, it was more about focusing on the clothes than anything else.

Nikhita Tandon, the only designer who featured a celebrity in her show, stated that she was surprised to be the only one. Because for her, it’s not that important to have a celebrity walking during a show, but for sure it helps to get easily noticed, especially for the new designers and can be very interesting for them.

Celibrity Showstoppers at Indian Fashion Weeks | Sonal Chauhan walking for Nikhita Tandon's collection at Amazon India Fashion Week 2015

Showcasing a celebrity within your show is a big choice to make, and sometimes some shows need a celebrity showstopper to gain more attention, depending on the major part of the collection that the designer wants to share.

For some designers, they believe that there is no particular need for a celebrity because their collections are already well known. And obviously, they have to take in account that showstoppers are attractive of course, but they are also very expensive.

For a Grand finale of an event such as Lakme Fashion Week or Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, it can be very interesting and important to have a celebrity in the show. This is because the finale will close the fashion event, so it’s understandable that the designer will want to make a lasting impression somehow,  sometimes the sponsor will even ask the designer to do it.

For others, it’s also the fact that showstoppers will not necessarily walk for a show without a particular reason. Often, it’s because it will bring the showstopper a kind of gratification, or because there is a friendship between the designer and the showstopper.

So the real question is, do you think that Indian designers really need celebrity showstoppers during an Indian fashion week?

Soon, Cavalli will finish his final process of talks to sell a major part of the brand he founded into one of the world’s most popular brands, but for the moment, the role that he will have in this ownership isn’t very clear.

Within his Milan Fashion Week show, Peter Dundas created a magical world with long legged models showcasing velvet pants teamed with bags with fringe detailing. His psychedelic collection also included mini-dresses with black and white optical patterns. An innovative collection not to be missed!

The Bollywood Celebrity Replica Trend

Recall the days when you brought a magazine with you to your favourite tailor and asked them to duplicate the ensemble of what your favourite star wore in a specific film? Now, you just have to go online, look at a variety of replicas that are available to purchase on websites, then select what Bollywood stars wore in their newest film or at particular red carpet event, and then simply order it. From a saree to a particular salwar kameez, you will be able to find it.

E-commerce brands have understood that Bollywood style clothing sells in a very large way, not just in India, but globally as well. Rahul Garg, the co-founder and CEO of ArtisanGilt.com stated that the global customers purchase extremely high-value products and their quantities are over double then by local customers.

According to Garg, these consumers are happy purchasing very expensive replicas of specific garments and accessories that have been showcased by Bollywood stars. He also claimed that his garments are actually made by the same materials and are designed precisely like the original.

Garg also stated that within the case of global customers, Bollywood is the main and important sector to showcase fashion garment trends in India. And that most these consumers purchase these particle items for social parties, particularly weddings.

Do you buy replicas? have any thoughts to share with us on the topic?

Bollywood Actresses and their Social Commitments

Who said that Bollywood Celebrities are only interested in themselves?

Indeed two weeks ago they attended an event organized by Nikhar Tandon in Mumbai to raise funds for cataract surgeries and medical camps, moreover a part of the proceeds will be developed to the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The host of the event was the founder of Samyedana Foundation, created in order to support under-privileged children. In this case the show was about artworks made by different artists, including Nikhar herself.

Among the guests present, some caught our attention for their sober and good-looking outfits. One of these was Karisma Kapoor dressed in a white shirt and floral pants, enhanced by high heels and open toe Louboutin shoes paired a statement necklace. The outfit was completed with a simple hairstyle constituted by a fishtail braid.

Other actresses opted for monochromatic outfits, for example Aditi Rao Hydari choose a long black kurta and embroidered pants designed by Anita Dongre, complemented by golden heels and a clutch in the same colour, finished by a beautiful necklace. The makeup was really simple and she looked chic and elegant.

Also the outfit chosen by Lisa Haydon was Black, even if it was a little bit more eye-catching because of the stripes on the dress. The chiffon top featured roses around the neck softening her outfit.

Completely in contrast with them, Parineeti Chopra opted for white trousers and same colour top paired with nude open shoes. Finally Gauhar Khan, the famous Raw Star, was wearing a black high- waist skirt and a white sleeveless top, obviously with black pointed heels. A puff hairstyle completed her outfit.

Will Freida Pinto ever Act in Bollywood?

Freida Pinto is a famous international actress who comes originally from India. She was born and grew up in Mumbai. Everybody knows her for her appearance in “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008), a movie directed by Danny Boyle.

Now Freida is an affirmed actress, who is waiting to present her new film “Knight of Cups” in 2015, in which she has acted with Hollywood actors Christian Bale and Natalie Portman. In the meantime she finally expressed her intention to work in India.

She is 30 years old, but has never worked in her own country. Indeed from when she was young she has always wanted to become a global actress so at some point of time she just packed her bags and took a plane to Hollywood. According to what she said, the most difficult thing is to convince Hollywood that Indian actors can play different roles, not just the ones related to their country.

Freida explained that when she goes to an audience, she is just an actress playing a role, not an Indian actress. Fortunately nowadays filmmakers are not so strict, they are open to hire actors from India in order to play different characters. A behaviour that was not so diffused 10 years ago.

She would like to become a role model for other Indian girls who dream of a different life, but at the same time she doesn’t forget her origins: Indian education permitted her to appreciate real relationships and to do not be scared by other countries’ poorness because she already experienced her own country’s one.

Indeed the only reason why she never made a Bollywood movie is that every time an opportunity came up, she was already committed with another film outside India. Maybe finally it is the right time for the actress to come back to her origins?
